A comprehensive portfolio of Cradle to Cradle Certified materials for the fashion industry is now available online.

Cradle to Cradle’s Fashion Positive Initiative launched the Materials Collection on Thursday featuring 39 materials for the fashion applications that are Cradle to Cradle certified or have received a Material Health Certificate, which at higher levels of certification ensures safe materials suitable for circular design.

“For many brands, designers and suppliers, it’s a long journey to circular fashion,” said Lewis Perkins, president of the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. “Fashion Positive meets our members wherever they are on that at and provided leadership, the vision and methodology to assist our partners in the transition to circularity. The Materials Collection is a big step in that direction. Materials are also assessed against our standard, so not only are they potentially circular, they are also making a positive impact right now.”

Of the 39 materials in the collection, 32 are Cradle to Cradle certified, which means they have been assessed and improved based on five categories — material health, material reuse, renewable energy, water stewardship and social awareness.

A Basic, Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum Certification indicates where the material falls. The goal is “circular materials” that can be perpetually cycled.

These materials include fabrics and yarns, buttons, labels, elastic and dyes for clothing and accessories. Each entry includes information on available sizes, weights, colors and a range of other specifications. Updated details about available stock and custom ordering are also part of the database.

Among the materials included in the new Fashion Positive Materials Collection are Lauffenmuhle’s Infinito Toolkit of elastic bands, buttons, sewing thread, woven labels, woven ribbon, interfacing and monofilament for 3-D printing; Dystar’s dyes and Maiyet’s cashmere and silk yarns.

“Being a part of Fashion Positive’s Materials Collection is huge for us,” said Fanny Vermandel, vice president of global marketing at Dystar Colours Distribution.

Fashion Positive is an initiative of the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. It was launched in 2014 to identify, innovate, certify and scale the fashion industry building blocks of the future.
